14. EDITORIAL PROCESS

The Journal of Surgical Research and Reviews follows a strict, impartial, and transparent double-blind peer-review process to ensure that submitted manuscripts meet appropriate standards of scientific validity, originality, relevance, and academic value.

Editorial decisions are based on reviewers evaluations, the journal editorial policies, and the final judgment of the Editor. Each manuscript considered suitable for review is normally sent to at least two independent external reviewers. When reviewer opinions differ significantly, an additional reviewer may be invited to provide further assessment. Acceptance for publication generally requires favorable recommendations from two reviewers, along with editorial approval. Under the double-blind peer-review system, the identities of both authors and reviewers remain confidential. Reviewers comments, recommendations, and requests for revision are communicated to the authors anonymously. Authors are expected to submit a revised manuscript along with a detailed point-by-point response addressing each reviewer comment. The revision and re-evaluation process may continue until the reviewers and editorial team are satisfied that the manuscript meets the journal publication standards.

After acceptance, manuscripts undergo copyediting to improve grammar, punctuation, formatting, journal style, and overall presentation. Galley proofs are then sent to the corresponding author for final checking. Authors are required to return corrected proofs within three days. Corrections received after this deadline may not be incorporated. All communication between the journal and authors is conducted online. To support timely dissemination of research, accepted articles are published online after final approval. Manuscripts that do not comply with the journal Author Guidelines, formatting requirements, or article limits may be returned to authors for technical correction before peer review. Authors must revise and resubmit such manuscripts in accordance with the journal requirements before further editorial consideration.

15. DIGITAL IMAGE EDITING ETHICS

Authors must not add, relocate, alter, enhance, conceal, or remove any specific element within an image. Adjustments to brightness, contrast, or color balance are acceptable only when applied uniformly to the entire image and when such changes do not hide, misrepresent, or remove any information from the original image. Any image adjustments, including changes in image acquisition or processing settings, must be clearly disclosed in the figure legend.

16. AUTHOR CONTRIBUTION DETAILS

Authors are required to describe the specific contribution made by each individual author to the manuscript. Where applicable, contributions should be reported under categories such as study concept, study design, definition of intellectual content, literature search, clinical studies, experimental studies, data collection, data analysis, statistical analysis, manuscript drafting, manuscript editing, and manuscript review. At least one author must accept overall responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the work from the initial planning stage through publication. Such author or authors should be identified as the guarantor or guarantors of the manuscript.

17. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST / COMPETING INTERESTS

All authors must disclose any financial, personal, academic, institutional, or commercial conflicts of interest that may be related to the manuscript. This includes conflicts involving any institution, product, service, or organization mentioned in the manuscript or relevant to the study findings. Authors must also disclose any competing interests involving products, services, or organizations that may be in competition with those discussed in the manuscript.

18. INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD APPROVAL AND INFORMED CONSENT

All prospective and retrospective studies involving human participants must receive approval from an appropriate Institutional Review Board, Ethics Committee, or equivalent authority. Written informed consent must be obtained from all human participants, unless a formal waiver has been granted by the relevant review board or ethics committee. All studies involving animals must be approved by an appropriate institutional animal ethics committee, animal care committee, or equivalent regulatory body. Compliance with ethical approval and informed consent requirements must be clearly stated in the manuscript. Where consent has been waived, the waiver must also be mentioned. Manuscripts that do not meet these ethical requirements will not be considered for publication. All research articles must include statements on patient consent and/or ethical approval, along with the approval or protocol number and date, wherever applicable.

19. PROTECTION OF PATIENTS’ RIGHT TO PRIVACY

For all research involving human participants, informed consent to participate in the study must be obtained from the participants. In the case of children under 16 years of age, consent should be obtained from a parent or legal guardian. A statement confirming this must be included in the manuscript. Identifiable patient information, including names, initials, hospital numbers, clinical images, CT scans, photographs, sonograms, pedigrees, or other identifying details, must not be published unless essential for scientific purposes and unless written informed consent for publication has been obtained from the patient or, where applicable, from a parent or legal guardian. When a patient can be identified, informed consent for publication requires that the patient be given the opportunity to review the manuscript or relevant material before publication. Consent should be obtained whenever there is any uncertainty about whether anonymity can be fully protected. For example, covering only the eye region in patient photographs is not considered sufficient protection of identity. If identifying features are modified to preserve anonymity, such as in genetic pedigrees, authors must confirm that the changes do not alter the scientific meaning. Editors should also note such modifications where appropriate.

20. REPORTING GUIDELINES

Manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with the appropriate reporting guideline for the study design. Reports of randomized clinical trials should include all essential study details, such as the study protocol, intervention allocation, randomization method, allocation concealment, and masking or blinding procedures, in accordance with the CONSORT Statement. Authors must follow the relevant reporting guideline applicable to their manuscript type. A statement confirming compliance with the appropriate guideline should be included on the title page of the manuscript.

21. AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITY & AUTHORSHIP CRITERIA

The journal considers only original manuscripts that have not been published previously and are not under consideration by any other journal or publication platform. All authors must confirm that the submitted manuscript, or any substantial part of it, has not been published, submitted, or accepted elsewhere. Presentation of the work as an abstract in conference proceedings or scientific meetings will not be considered prior publication. However, if the study has been presented at a meeting or published previously as an abstract, authors must disclose this information at the time of submission and include the relevant details in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript. Any use of copyrighted material from previously published sources must be clearly acknowledged, and necessary permissions must be obtained where applicable. Material already published on a website will be treated as prior publication and must be disclosed during submission. Authors are also required to declare any related manuscripts or publications, including those published in another language.

Authorship should be granted only to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the work. Authorship credit should be based on all of the following criteria:

  1. Significant contribution to the study concept and design, data acquisition, data analysis, or interpretation of results;
  2. Drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content;
  3. Final approval of the version submitted for publication; and
  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, including ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the manuscript are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Each author should have contributed sufficiently to accept public responsibility for the relevant content of the manuscript. The order of authors should reflect their relative contribution to the study and preparation of the manuscript. After submission, the author order cannot be changed unless written consent is obtained from all listed authors. The journal allows a maximum of eight authors for all manuscript categories, except Case Reports and Case Series, for which the maximum number of authors is four. Authors must designate one corresponding author who will communicate with the journal office regarding all matters related to the manuscript. The corresponding author is responsible for submitting the final manuscript and ensuring that all revisions requested by the reviewers and editors are appropriately addressed.

22. RESEARCH ETHICS AND SCIENTIFIC MISCONDUCT

All studies involving human participants must be conducted in accordance with the ethical principles outlined in the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their research complies with accepted ethical, legal, and regulatory standards.

Scientific misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Data Fabrication, Falsification, and Misrepresentation: Authors must not fabricate, falsify, selectively report, suppress, manipulate, or distort research data or findings. Any form of dishonest presentation of data, including deceptive reporting or omission of relevant results, is considered serious misconduct.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism refers to the use of another person’s words, ideas, data, concepts, or intellectual property without proper acknowledgment, permission, or citation, and presenting them as own original work. This applies to material taken from published or unpublished sources, including abstracts, grant proposals, ethics committee applications, manuscripts, books, websites, and electronic or print publications. Direct copying of sentences or paragraphs from previously published work, whether from another author’s publication or from an author’s own earlier publication, is unacceptable unless properly quoted and cited. Authors must carefully review their manuscripts to ensure that no text has been copied verbatim from published sources without appropriate attribution.

Self-Plagiarism and Duplicate Use of Published Work: Self-plagiarism occurs when authors reuse substantial portions of their own previously published work without proper citation or disclosure. Although this may occur unintentionally, authors are required to clearly identify, cite, and disclose any reused material from their own earlier publications or from the work of others.

Incorrect or Inappropriate Authorship: Authorship misconduct includes excluding individuals who have made substantial contributions, including individuals who have not contributed meaningfully, submitting a manuscript without the consent of all authors, or presenting the same or substantially similar work as original in more than one publication.

Misappropriation of Ideas: Scholarly work often involves the exchange of ideas during peer review, grant evaluation, academic discussion, and research collaboration. However, using another person’s ideas, data, methods, or unpublished work without permission or acknowledgment is unethical. Misuse or wholesale appropriation of such material constitutes misconduct.

Violation of Accepted Research Practices: Improper research practices include manipulating experiments to produce desired outcomes, using misleading statistical or analytical methods, selectively interpreting results, or reporting findings in a deceptive or biased manner.

Non-Compliance with Legal and Regulatory Requirements: Authors must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and institutional requirements related to research. This includes regulations governing human participants, animal care and use, research funding, investigational drugs, recombinant products, medical devices, radioactive materials, biological agents, and chemical substances.

Any form of unethical conduct is strictly prohibited. Depending on the nature and severity of the misconduct, the journal may reject or retract the manuscript and may restrict the submitting author and associated research group from submitting future manuscripts for a defined period.
